Spider veins are tiny distended veins in the skin and are the most common vascular blemish of the legs. They are much more common in women and their most prominent characteristic is their reddish or bluish color. They too are inherited and have nothing to do with diet, exercise or weight. Like varicose veins, they often make their first appearance or noticeably worsen with the hormone changes of pregnancy.
While spider veins may cause significant discomfort, usually burning, aching or heaviness, they are a cosmetic problem and not a sign of poor circulation. Treatment to relieve them is not covered by health insurance.
